A day for your boss

It’s fitting that today, a Saturday, is Boss’ Day – even when we’re not at work, the boss is on our mind! DT lists the modern problems created by modern bosses
A day for your boss
There’s a special day for bosses, you’re thinking? Yes, there is – even after all the time they take up (and often ruin), in your average day.
But today, since it is Boss’ Day, here are the newage problems created by newage bosses – if, that is, you think these are ‘problems’ to begin with!
Heart work
While Priyanka Chopra ended up marrying hers, Konkona almost fell for the charms of her boss.
1x1 polls
We’re talking about the bosses portrayed by Rahul Khanna (“Love Aaj Kal”, “Wake Up Sid”) and Bobby Deol (“Dostana”). At some point, you’re likely to end up working for a boss who’s pretty much in the same age group as you. If she/he happens to be good-looking or flirtatious, Cupid’s going to have a busy workday too. “My boss made it very evident that he had the hots for me, and he said it in as many words. He started sending me flowers for what he called my ‘birthday week’. I was the hottest topic of discussion in the office. I didn’t want to rub him the wrong way and burn bridges, so I looked for another job and moved on,” says Shweta (name changed), a stylist working with a magazine.
Works hard, parties harder
Had plans with friends, told your boss that you had a stomach ache and asked for half the day off? Make sure you have an explanation if you happen to bump into him/her in the nightclub – because it’s not a remote possibility at all, thanks to younger, with-it bosses. “My boss stays in Vasant Kunj and I know that he steps out often for a drink. Although I was a regular at the Priya Complex, I stopped going there. No way in hell did I want to bump into him. He wouldn’t have said anything, but still...,” says Monica Singh, who’s working with a publishing firm in Okhla.

The networking boss
Social networking sites are cool – both for you and your boss. “Three weeks after I joined, my boss sent me a friend request on my social networking account. She even asked me once if I’d checked her request, and I had to accept it. Now my account is as good as dead. I have to think twice before I post an update or a picture, while she’s merrily going on about her life on her page,” says Arpit Sharma, an IT professional.
Dressed to embarrass
If you have a boss who rules the sartorial pecking order too, you can’t walk into office with a jholachhaap look. “When I was in college, the jhola-chappal look was so cool. But when I started working with my boss, elder to me by some 10 years, I looked shamefully shabby next to him in his dapper suits. And of course, all the girls on the floor had eyes only for him, although I’m not bad-looking either,” recalls Vivaan Sharma, a media professional.
Same excuse, boss?
With a young boss around, be a li’l more careful with your excuses. Chances are, a couple of years ago, she/he was using the same ones. “In one of our department meetings, my boss said that in her presence, there was no reason to lie. She told us that even if we wanted to go watch a movie, meet our boyfriends/girlfriends, we could tell her. That’s what we’ve been doing ever since, and she never refuses us half days and leaves, unless necessary,” says Sapna Seth, a banker.
